History

As the Korean community grew in America, many Korean chaplains became keenly aware of the importance of forming a chaplaincy organization, providing a leadership on the issues of pastoral and spiritual care based on Korean cultural traditions and values, educating Koreans in the care of non-Koreans and, conversely, non-Koreans in the care of Koreans, and promoting professional chaplaincy with a special reference to multi-cultural competency in pastoral care.  December 21, 2006, eight Korean chaplains, four women and four men, gathered together at The HealthCare Chaplaincy (HCC), New York to create the Association of Korean Chaplains in America (AKC). The support to organize AKC came from The HealthCare Chaplaincy and we thank HCC for encouraging and hosting our first meeting.

The Association of Korean Chaplains, Inc. was filed and approved by the Department of State, State of New York as non-for-profit organization on May 13, 2008.
